Parking Tickets on an Old License Plate

There are a variety of reasons why you might lose ownership of a license plate. Whether you sold, lost, or transferred your plates however, it’s possible that you may still get tickets on a plate you no longer own. What do you do in this situation? Dispute it of course! Here are some tips on how to do so.

Stolen Vehicle

In the event that your vehicle is ever stolen, you should report it immediately. If you’re lucky, you’ll get your car back, but you may also get some tickets back along with it. Documentation such as a police report can be the proof you need to beat tickets that were received while your vehicle was missing. If you do not get your vehicle back, other documents, such as insurance cancellation can help as well.

Transferred Vehicle

If you transferred your car to someone else by sale or gift, make sure to remove your registration sticker before it leaves your hands. If you receive a ticket for it, you can present evidence such as DMV plate transfer or surrender papers from yourself, or registration documents from the new owner. Insurance documentation will work in this case as well.

Lost or Stolen Plates

You can treat stolen plates like a stolen vehicle. Make sure to report them immediately and take care of any paperwork that needs to be done. Like with a stolen vehicle, police reports make great evidence, in addition to registration and DMV documentation.
